Abstract

Robotics technology can be used to benefit people with disabilities. This project describes the mounting of a robotic arm to an electric wheelchair to assist the handicapped in daily activities. Although there are many potential benefits for the disabled, there are also very string requirements and concessions, which must be considered in integrating the robotic arm with the wheelchair. The project concentrates at how these integration issues have been dealt with. The project is involved with robotic elements. It consists of separate discipline within the overall spectrum of engineering, Mechanical, Electronic engineering, and Computer Science.

From the definition, it is Mechatronic in integration.

‘Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and processes.’ - Festo Didactic GmbH Co1998

Objectives

Users were taken a large part in the design of the system, individuals with motor impairments such as paraplegia and spinal cord injuries may have difficulties with daily activities. Advanced technology exists to faciclitate their actions and increase their abilities. To widen the activity range of users, an assistive arm had better mount on the wheelchair. Mounting the robotics arm in this position on a fixed mounting point is relatively simple to implement, is not visually obtrusive and does not block the user's line of vision, while still allowing a reasonable forward reach.

The objectives of this project are to:

  1. Assist such people in daily living tasks or in a vocational setting
  2. Enhance their abilities
  3. Assist with motion and an increasing range of other tasks
  4. Accomplish some everyday tasks
  5. Allow patients to live much more independent lives
